Thoreson’s practice centers on complex commercial litigation with a strong emphasis on real estate disputes, where he has represented some of the nation’s largest property owners, developers, and investment firms. His work spans state and federal trial, appellate, and supreme court levels across multiple states and jurisdictions, handling matters that generally range from $500,000 to over $200,000,000.
Among his many notable successes, Thoreson secured a $97 million jury verdict in Federal Court and achieved a $230 million recovery for the University of Washington Treasury Department in litigation against its former custodial bank, arising out of the 2008 “Great Recession”. Recently, Thoreson led a team of lawyers and experts representing a multi-billion-dollar privately held company in complicated public/private litigation, which, after two years of trial work, resulted in a recovery of almost $100,000,000, which was almost 100 times more than the offer made by the opposing entities that triggered the litigation.
Beyond real estate, his litigation experience extends to securities, construction, investment, and title-related issues, where he has consistently delivered favorable results that protect business continuity and financial stability. Thoreson has also guided clients through high-stakes private company disputes not known to the public, as resolved through early negotiations or private arbitration. Additionally, he has represented well-known companies such as Sono Bello in contract disputes nationwide, successfully resolving the matters for his client.
In addition to his courtroom accomplishments, Thoreson is committed to advancing the legal profession and his community. He has taught lawyers real estate litigation for the Washington State Bar Association, being named Best CLE Presentation of the Year on one occasion. In addition, at various times, he has taught business law to MBA students.
