He is also an Adjunct Instructor at Troy University’s School of Social Work and Human Services.
Wearing multiple hats, Michael is a licensed REALTOR® at Community 1st Real Estate in Dothan, Alabama, and the COO at Dothan Housing, where he oversees the day-to-day operations of the Moving to Work (MTW) Landlord Incentives Agency. He also serves as the Principal and CEO at Elevate Housing Solutions, LLC, where he leads a team offering Section 8 Program consulting services to a diverse clientele, including real estate investors, developers, landlords, nonprofits, property management companies, and public housing authorities (PHAs).
Michael’s personal touch with landlords stems from his hands-on experience managing multifamily apartment complexes and single-family homes. His career boasts the development of multimillion-dollar mixed-use, mixed-financed, and mixed-income communities, a testament to his ability to leverage resources effectively.
A true advocate for the Section 8 Program, Michael is on a mission to transform perceptions. Through evidence-based education, he challenges stereotypes and champions the program’s merits. His dedication and academic rigor set him apart as one of the foremost thought leaders in recent memory.
Known as The Section 8 Landlord Coach™, Michael is a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in real estate investment strategies, particularly in landlord matters for the Section 8 Program. He uses his platform to provide landlords with real estate tips to increase positive cash flow and maximize their return on investment (ROI). Moreover, he utilizes his platform to help other PHAs implement his Attracting, Recruiting, & Retaining Landlords model for their Section 8 Programs to build better PHA-landlord relationships.
Academically, Michael earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, his Master of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice Administration from the University of South Florida, and his Doctor of Public Administration from West Chester University in Pennsylvania, with a dissertation on landlords in the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program.
With a rich professional history, Michael has navigated roles within the real estate industry’s public, private, and nonprofit sectors. In 2012, he founded the 501 (c) nonprofit organization, Corporation to Develop Communities of America, Inc., focusing on real estate development and neighborhood revitalization in low-and-moderate-income (LMI) communities.
Actively engaged in esteemed national organizations, Michael is a member of the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR), the American Apartment Owners Association (AAOA), the National Association for Real Estate Brokers (NARPM), the Public Housing Authorities Directors Association (PHADA), the National Apartment Association (NAA), and the National Association of Housing & Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO). In addition, he serves on several committees, such as the Governmental Affairs Committee of NARPM, the Legislative Advisory Network, and the Community Revitalization & Development (CR&D) Committees of NAHRO.
He is also the At-Large Board Director for Alabama for the Southeast Regional Section 8 Housing Association (SERSHA). Locally, he is a member of the ministry leadership team at Rhema Rock Church Dothan, a member of the Dothan Rotary Club, serves as a board director with the Barnabus School of Leadership Charter School in Dothan, and is a proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
