In January 2011, Mark suffered a seizure that led to a diagnosis of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and required two emergency surgeries at Baptist Hospital: a craniotomy to remove a large meningioma from his frontal lobe and cyber-knife surgery to excise another meningioma from the olfactory cavity. His recovery was remarkable, surpassing medical expectations. However, in 2014, a fall from his roof while trimming a palm tree left him paralyzed from the neck down. At “The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis,” he was told he would likely never walk again. With intense therapy and acupuncture, supported by his wife, Mark defied the odds and walked from his hospital bed to his room, earning the praise of neurosurgeons as a miracle. Over the next two years, he regained mobility but was ultimately classified as Totally and Permanently Disabled. After battling opioid addiction for pain management, he successfully transitioned to alternative medications, which he now takes daily.
